My petition to Have Herb Cain inducted into the Hall of Fame was submitted to the Selection committee on January 29, 2022. Now the wait is on. Unfortunately it didnt Bear fruit so, I have created a NEW Petition and it is here. Help Induct Herb Cain into the Hockey Hall of Fame
Please sign it and share it everywhere.
I was not even 6 years old when My cousin Herb Passed away, at 69 Years old. I met him only once before then, and I was so Young I dont even Remember if I knew Who the Montreal Maroons were. All I know is He Played Hockey and I loved Hockey.
Fast Forward to Now, And I know alot more about him.
Herb Was Born in Newmarket Ontario. He Has other Family as well who have Played Hockey but None had the Successes he did. His Cousin Jack Cain was a Career AHLer. His Brother Jim "Dutch" Cain Played for the Toronto St Pats. But none Took Hold as much as "Herbie", as he was Known, did.
From 1933 Through 1938 He Played for the Montreal Maroons.
With the Maroons, He Played with Such well known Greats as Baldy Northcott, Reginald Smith, Russ Blinco, Jimmy Ward, and in 1934-35, won the Stanley Cup, Playing along side Bob Gracie, Jimmy Ward, Gus Marker, Lionel Conacher, and Another of My Cousins: Hector Toe Blake.
He Joined the Canadiens de Montreal for the 1938-39 Season before Being Traded to the Boston Bruins to start the 1939-40 Season.
In Boston, He had his Most Productive Career. In 1940-41, he Again won the Stanley Cup, while Being Coached by Art Ross, who was also the Team General Manager.
In 1943-44 he set a Scoring Record and won the Scoring Title (Not yet Named Art Ross Trophy). He was also Named 2nd Team allstar. His Scoring Record was 36 Goals, 46 Assists, for 82 Points in 48 Games Played.
When He decided to Ask for A Salary Increase, Art Ross was So Insulted, He shipped Herb to the AHL Hershey Bears for the 1945-46 Season as Punishment. He Forbade all other Teams from Trying to Trade for him. Undeterred, Herb Helped the Bears win their Franchise FIRST Calder Cup.
His Scoring Record was not Beaten until 1950-51, when Gordie Howe scored 43 Goals and 43 Assists for 86 Points in 70 Games. It took 22 More Games for Gordie to Beat Herbs Record by only 4 Points.
In 1955, Herb was Diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease and Doctors couldnt Treat it, so he was Forced to Retire and was told to Go home and Enjoy what's left of his Time. Again, Undeterred, He sought An experimental Treatment and Made a full Recovery.
He Returned to Newmarket Ontario and Became Head Coach of the Newmarket Junior Smoke Rings Hockey Team. While he coached them, The Team won an Impressive 3 Titles.
Since his Retirement from Hockey Life, The Town of Newmarket Ontario has Named him to their Newmarket Sports Hall of Fame. The Town also Named a Street after him. When he wanted to Visit the Stanley Cup or Scoring title he Won, He had to Pay admission to the Hall of Fame as a Fan.
He Became Eligible for Induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame 64 Years ago. Yet to this day, He is Not Inducted.
A few Years ago, while Researching, I discovered my Cousins and Herb's Grandchildren Had been Submitting annual Requests to the Hall for his Induction, but Have gotten no Reply, and no Nomination or vote Has ever been Held.
This is Where I came in.
In 2017, I started my Own Petition for Induction, which I plan to Submit to Geoff Molson, owner of the Canadiens, and Cam Neely of the Bruins. Both sit on the Hall of Fame Board. One or Both can Easily Nominate him. All it takes is one.
To do this though, I need Many more Signatures than I have. Please Visit this Link and Sign if you Havent. Please Share it if you please. Tag everyone you can think of. Your Favorite Canadian Musicians. Favorite NHL and AHLers. Your Favorite Authors and Bloggers and Artists.
Here's the Petition: Herb Cain to the Hall of Fame
I also Submitted a Nomination to the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. With any Luck BOTH will finally Give Herb the Honors he deserves.
Thank you.
